Dental implants are becoming one of the most popular choices of tooth replacement for a reason. Garner Family and Cosmetic Dentistry’s Dr. Angela Wingate discusses the benefits of getting dental implants in Garner, NC, and why more and more patients are choosing them to replace your missing teeth.

Why People Choose Dental Implants in Garner, North Carolina

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are made up of three parts. There’s a titanium post that’s the actual implant that gets placed in the jaw. The abutment is the part that’s placed on top of that post that will connect the post until the final restoration. Lastly, a dental crown is typically the restoration that goes on top of a dental implant.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Implants are a great option for many reasons. One of the top reasons is that they’re the only tooth replacement option that replaces the entire tooth. This means that it replaces the tooth root as well as the crown.

Replacing the tooth root shows a ton of benefits that set dental implants above other options. Dental implants can prevent bone loss, gum recession, and the appearance of a sagging face. They can also reduce the risk of gum disease. These are all benefits that you don’t get with any other restoration options, as these all come from the actual implantation of the post in the jaw.

In addition, implants are extremely stable. You don’t have to worry about chewing or speaking, the implants will stay in. They feel and look like natural teeth. If you’re getting dentures or a partial as your restoration, it’ll also be sturdier than these methods would be on their own. Implant-supported dentures mean a normal diet and no adhesives. They’re more comfortable because there’s no rubbing of the gums or soft tissue.

Dental implants are very easy to take care of. You don’t have to do anything extra, just what you would for natural teeth. Keep a steady brushing and flossing routine and visit our office for regular checkups and cleanings. Dr. Wingate can keep an eye on the implants to make sure they’re still working well. If you take care of them, your implants should last for up to 20 years!

What’s the Dental Implant Process?

The process of getting dental implants is a bit of a long one, but it’s worth it. First, Dr. Jenne will do a full assessment of your oral health. She’ll discuss your budget and goals to make sure all three of these things align before the dental implant procedure begins.

For the first step, the titanium posts are implanted into your jaw. They take approximately three to six months to completely fuse with your jawbone. This healing process can’t be rushed. This is what gives dental implants the stability that patients want. The jawbone will heal itself around the titanium posts.

Once this process is complete, we’ll attach abutments to the top of the posts. A dental crown or other option will be custom made for your final restoration. We use local anesthesia to numb the entire area through this process. However, you’ll probably feel some pain after this process. If it’s pain that’s severe or lasts for several days, please call us immediately.
