You’ve just been told you need a dental crown. Maybe a tooth chipped, maybe a big filling finally gave out, or maybe you just finished a root canal. Either way, you’re now facing a decision you probably didn’t expect: do you go with a traditional crown or a same-day crown?

It’s a fair question, and the answer isn’t the same for everyone. Both options restore your tooth beautifully. They just get there differently. Let’s break down the differences so you can walk into your appointment knowing exactly what to expect.

Same-Day Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns in Garner, NC

What Does a Crown Do?

A crown is a custom cap that covers your entire tooth. It protects a weak or damaged tooth from breaking, restores its shape and size, and improves its appearance. People get crowns for chipped teeth, teeth with large fillings, teeth that have had root canals, and sometimes for cosmetic improvements.

The key word here is “custom.” A crown has to fit your tooth precisely. If it doesn’t, it can feel off, trap bacteria, or fail altogether.

How Traditional Crowns Work

With a traditional crown, the process happens over two appointments, usually spaced about two weeks apart.

  1. At the first visit, Dr. Jenne prepares your tooth by reshaping it so the crown fits.
  2. Then we take an impression of your mouth.
  3. We send that impression to a dental lab, where a technician carefully crafts your permanent crown.
  4. While you wait, you wear a temporary crown to protect the tooth.
  5. At the second visit, we remove the temporary and cement your permanent crown in place.

This approach has been the standard for decades, and it works well. The lab has time to create a highly detailed, precise restoration. The tradeoff is that you’ll wear a temporary crown for a couple of weeks, so you need to be a little careful. Temporaries can come loose or break, and they don’t always feel quite right.

How Same-Day Crowns Work at Garner Family and Cosmetic Dentistry

Same-day crowns, sometimes called one-visit crowns, use digital technology to skip the lab entirely. We prepare your tooth the same way we would for a traditional crown. But instead of taking a messy impression, we use a small digital scanner to create a 3D image of your tooth. We load that image into software and design your crown right there in the office. Then a milling machine carves your crown from a solid block of ceramic while you relax.

In most cases, you walk out the same day with your permanent crown. No temporaries, no second appointment, no waiting.

The Pros and Cons of Each

Same-day crowns win on convenience. One visit, one numbing appointment, and you’re done. There’s no temporary to worry about, and you don’t have to take extra time off work for a second appointment. Many patients also appreciate seeing the whole process happen in front of them.

The main limitation is material. Same-day crowns are typically milled from ceramic blocks, which look great and are very strong. But they may not offer the same level of customization as lab-made crowns, especially for complex cases or highly visible teeth.

Traditional crowns offer the widest range of materials and the highest level of customization, since a skilled technician shapes and layers the crown by hand. For front teeth or complicated bites, that extra artistry can matter.

The tradeoff is time. Two appointments, two rounds of numbing, and a couple of weeks in a temporary crown. Some patients find that inconvenient, and temporaries do occasionally cause issues.

Which One Is Right for You?

There’s no single correct answer. It depends on the tooth, your schedule, your budget, and your preferences. For back teeth that take a lot of chewing force, a same-day crown is often a great fit. For front teeth where appearance matters most, a lab-made crown might give you a better result. And sometimes, it simply comes down to what’s most practical for your life.
